Attendance
Attendance at Chiltern Academy is a priority for our pupils. Staff are invested in ensuring that pupils are fully aware of the positive correlation between attendance and achievement.
There is a strong statistical link between good school attendance and achieving good results. Students who frequently miss school may fall behind in their work, which may affect their future prospects.
Good school attendance also shows future employers that a young person is reliable, more likely to achieve well and play a positive role in their community.
For our students to gain the greatest benefit from their education it is vital that they attend regularly and your child should be at school, on time, every day the school is open unless the reason for the absence is unavoidable.
TO REPORT A CHILD'S ABSENCE:
On each day of absence, you must contact our Attendance team. You are able to do this by telephone or email.
Telephone
Please contact school by telephone before 9.00am on 01582 310644 and press 1 for the Absence line.
Please leave a message on the answer system clearly stating:
- Student’s full Name
- Form Group
- Reason for Absence
Please email attendance@chiltern-academy.co.uk before 9.00am on the day of absence clearly stating:
- Student’s full name
- Form Group
- Reason for Absence
Due to the volume of messages received, your messages may not be acknowledged.
Should the absence be over 3 days a medical certificate confirming the date/s and reason for absence must be provided.
Not all absences are authorised and are considered on individual circumstances.
Medical Appointments
Routine appointments such as eye examinations and dental check-ups should be made outside of school hours or during the school holidays.
Should your child require time off during the school day for an unavoidable medical appointment, it is your responsibility to ensure:
- You email attendance@chiltern-academy.co.uk confirming the appointment time and the student’s full name.
- The email should state the time your child will leave/return to school.
- It is your child's responsibility to remember they have an appointment and they should come to Reception in order to sign out, prior to leaving.
If the appointment is after 10.00am, students must attend school and register. The medical appointment will then not impact on a child's attendance figure, as long as they return to school afterwards. If a student does not do this, each appointment will reduce a student's attendance by approximately 50% of that day (students receive 2 attendance marks per day, one for the morning and one for the afternoon).
Requests for Leave of Absence
Our school does not authorise any time off for holidays, or extended visits out of the country. Again, this is to ensure that pupils' learning potential is maximised, as is their achievement.
If this is absolutely unavoidable please expect these absences to be unauthorised and for enforcement procedures such as a fine to follow.

Ensuring your child’s regular attendance at school is your legal responsibility and permitting absence from school without a good reason creates an offence in law and may result in prosecution.
